Celebrating a Century of Service

The Mississippi Dental Society was incorporated in the state of Mississippi on April 1, 1920. The Societies charter members consisted of a group of African American Dentist that were geographically diverse. The Objective of the Mississippi Dental Society is to promote the art and science of dentistry. These individuals understood that they were much more together than apart and they were in part if not the totality of their community.  Our ambition is to raise the standard of the dental profession, stimulate favorable relations and good fellowship among dentist and other health professional’s work for the health of the community we serve; and work persistently for elimination of religious and racial discrimination, and segregation from dental institutions, clinics and organizations.

The Mississippi Dental Society has served the community not only as clinicians, but as pillars of the community. We have not done this alone. With the partnership of health professionals, over the state of Mississippi, we have served the population of Mississippi for 100 plus years. We consider this an honor and an obligation to the population of Mississippi.

“Rise Up Mississippi and Stand with US”.

Message from the President

Greeting MDS Family and Partners,

Where does the time go? It is hard to believe I have been practicing dentistry for 24 years. It seems like yesterday that I was rushing to class at Meharry Medical College and recruiting patients to get my requirements for graduation. I often think back on the startup years of private practice and the difficult challenges. There were so many unknowns, so many questions, so little money, and little to no experience in managing patients, staff or business.

I was blessed to be invited to the annual conference of the Mississippi Black Professionals Association. It was mind blowing to attend a joint meeting of Dentist, Lawyers, Pharmacist and Physicians who focused on networking, education, mentorship and social awareness. Without hesitation I knew I needed to be a part of this experience so joined the Mississippi Dental Society.

Beyond the great continuing education offered during dental conferences, the Mississippi Dental Society provides a network of experienced dentist and staff who are more than willing to provide mentorship to young, green enthusiastic doctors like I was 24 years ago.

Our organization is much more than a membership, it is a family relationship. We have strived to commit to our members professionally and personally. I am honored to serve the next two years as your president.

In this climate of the daily grind where the cost of operation is increasing as insurance reimbursements decrease, staff shortages and lack of motivation to grow and perform, technology failures in paperless office, broken appointments/no-shows, stopped up toilets, and my favorite; staff members dropping the most expensive equipment after warranty has just expired. It is on these days that you need a friend or three to encourage you and say it is going to be okay. We all have those days; but we are still doing what we love.

Every day I am grateful to GOD to be able to provide good quality care to patients who trust our team to serve their dental needs. This is the mindset every practicing dentist should strive to possess and being a member of the Mississippi Dental Society can help you achieve your idea practice and mindset. Mississippi dental Society is also very instrumental in recruiting and mentoring dental students and prospective students. We have a great relationship with the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry and the local Student National Dental Association at UMMC.

As corporate dentistry continues to grow, we have been focused on creating meaningful dialogue to create CE courses centered around strengthening private practice and helping owners prepare to transition their practice.

There is no better time than now to become a member or partner with this great organization. Please visit our website monthly for updates on future meetings, then register and join us for great fellowship.
